The many clones of Anthy
By louchan
Strange title, isn’t it? Well, this is a theory of my own concerning Anthy’s body, and control over other bodies of herself. (But it really doesn’t have anything to do with cloning, so don’t worry.) I think it might be possible that Anthy’s real body is stuck in the coffin we saw in episode 39. It’s her true self, her mortal body.

(I’m aware that the coffin and most of episode 39 are in general just metaphors, but I still find this theory very appealing.) The Anthy we see walking around at school with Utena and everyone else is another body, and an immortal one at that. Should that body die, a new one would appear. (As it has been stated and also made clear that Anthy cannot die.) And not only that, but Anthy can be at two separate places with two different bodies at once, perhaps even more. Sounds crazy? Allow me to explain. In episode 26 we saw Miki talking on the phone with his father. It turns out the man is getting married, and is wondering if Miki or Kozue has any qualms about it. The father momentarily hands over the phone to his future wife who tells them they don’t have to start calling her “mother” at once and… well now.

That lady sure looks familiar. But how would this be possible? The entire episode we’ve seen Anthy walking around with Utena. Not only that but this scene takes place during the night, with Miki sitting on his bed, and just prior to it we had the usual scene of Utena and Anthy holding hands in bed. So really, only one conclusion can be drawn for this: Anthy can be at a completely different place with another body of herself. We can also assume that she’s been getting to know Miki’s father for a longer time, so that body must have been with him for quite some time. It’s also possible that Anthy while pretending to be Mamiya was a separate body, but since we never saw the “normal” Anthy around while Mamiya was around, and also got scenes of Utena wondering where Anthy is, I kinda doubt that, and I admit it weakens this theory. Do I believe this theory myself? Maybe. I find it highly plausible, but also try to remember that there really are no right or wrong answers to anything in Utena. It’s just a thought that I’ve enjoyed playing with, and I don’t think it’s half bad either.
